A dining experience showcasing the treasures of the Tuscan coast

Travel diaries

During a recent trip to Tuscany, our most memorable dining experience was at Ristorante La Dogana, a family-owned restaurant tucked between the Tuscan hills and coast. It uniquely blended traditional and new-style offerings in a peaceful setting amongst the olive trees, sunshine and warm breeze. Following are photos and details of our multi-course meal, which capture the true ingredients, flavors and magic of a dining experience on the Tuscan coast.

We started off with two excellent fish dishes paired with an extra dry Senior Bortolomiol prosecco.

Subtly poached langoustine, squid and an assertive, creamy bottarga sauce
Delicately fried squid: crisp, light, textured and salty

Pasta was the star of this course, which includes the squid ink tagliatelle the restaurant has been serving since 1975.

Dark squid ink handmade tagliatelle with bite-size pieces of langoustine in a delicate briny sauce
Spaghetti alla chitarra with mussels, clams and bottarga. A blend of chewy pasta, briny sweet shellfish and tangy mullet roe
Branzino, lightly fried on a bed of tart and buttery onions: a dish that typifies Italiansโ€™ ability to make magic with 3 ingredients

We paired these rich, flavorful secondi courses with a lighter local wine from 2015 called Panizzi Vernaccia di San Gimignano reserva.

Filet of beef topped with a slab of foie gras
Turbot with zucchini, vanilla and salsa agrodolce

For dessert, we sipped on Nonino moscato and espresso, and couldn’t resist tasting the chocolate cigar.

Crisp tuile shaped like a cigar, filled with homemade ice cream and dusted with nougat and biscotti crumble for texture

We didnโ€™t eat like this at every meal, but when youโ€™re in a special place at the right time, enjoying great service and hospitality, you feel inclined to make the most of it. Thanks to the talented staff at La Dogana, which we highly recommend.
